Canning is one of my favorite non-writing related things to do. I first learned to can tomatoes watching my grandparents, parents, aunt, and uncles do it while I was growing up. I remember bushels of tomatoes lined up on the porch in my grandmothers backyard. I didn’t help much then, I was too busy playing with all my cousins, but I did help my parents can tomatoes once I was older. I picked it up again after I got married. It helps me feel connected to my grandmother. It’s also a great time to let the mind wonder and come up with some amazing story ideas. So I guess in a way it’s still a writing related hobby.
